RGOP Episode 14 Notes

August 19, 2018

By Alex Austin

It finally happened... I don't know how and I don't know why, but I was finally able to take some time and start Octopath Traveler on the Switch and I can honestly say it's the best all-around classic-style RPG's I've played in a while.

I say "classic-style" only because Octopath leans so heavily into the style of classic Square RPG's, and it does so very responsibly. There are some common RPG tropes that you'll run into while playing (not always a bad thing), but there's also some solid fresh story and character content, as well.

If you played Bravely Default (I believe also a  product from the Octopath Team) then the combat won't hold many surprises - However, the combat is solid and thoroughly enjoyable. There are some interesting story setups for several of the okayabke characters that culminate in great introductory boss battles, as well.

I won't go on and on - make sure to check out the Podcast for more on Octopath!

Rob and I are both Smash Brothers fabs since the original SSB on N64 (check out Epsiode 13 for more on that!), and our hype for Ultimate is VERY real. I am looking forward to Smash more than any other game this year, and I believe we will have the best entry in the series on our hands come December.

My only hold up is the lack of a playable Waluigi (there's quite a campaign going on around the net and social media related to this, as well). You've got your Luigi's, you got your Mario's, you got your Wario... WHY Nintendo hasn't added in Waluigi is beyond me... Especially because he's a recurring character in every modern Mario Tennis title (including Aces).

Right now he seems to be relegated to assist trophy status... But the curiously coloured yellow and purple chairs in the background of the latest Nintendo Direct might hint at something special on the horizon!!

We'll make sure to get updates from Rob for Episode 15 about WoW: Battle for Azeroth and Call of Cthulu. I've been busy with work and life stuff but I did get the chance to try out a few hours of Okami HD on the Switch, looking forward to dishing out some details!!
